The ruins of Bramber Castle are the last remnants of a legacy of conquest, intrigue, and bloodshed. From the Norman Warlord who first called the castle home, to the cavalier soldiers who met their end beneath enemy cannon fire, Bramber Castle boasts a long and enthralling history, spanning from the Battle of Hastings, right up until the 16th Century.
The fallen walls of Bramber are soaked with a tales from days of old, and memories of years gone by, but it is up to you to decide which of these stories you would like to breathe life back into.
Though there are countless tales surrounding this old castle, below are a few suggestions of stories that you might wish to focus on, to get your brain whirring.
Brother Algar
A monk serving at the Castle Abbey, Brother Algar is caught in the middle of the dispute between the other monks, and the 1st William De Braose. A kind, and simple man, Brother Algar tries to distance himself from the bickering, and disapproves of the manner in which the other monks handle the situation.
The Ogre Of Abergavenny
William de Braose, the 4th lived a fascinating life; peppered with stories of war, treason, and rebellion. Before he fell out of favour with King John, the so called “Ogre of Abergavenny” spent his time ruling over his various settlements, from his seat of power at Bramber. A fierce and mighty warrior, who even fought against the French King, Philip II, during the French Invasion of Normandy, the Ogre of Abergavenny was both feared and renowned.
Edmund Cartwright
A cavalier soldier, stationed in Bramber Castle, before the attack. As a member of the English gentry, Edmund feels out of his depth in a battle-situation, but is determined to play his part in the war against the Roundheads, and see that Charles the 1st remains on the throne, no matter the cost.
