Bramber Castle Key Words

Here are a list of keywords, in relation to the educational Bramber Articles, that we believe may be useful to students, in order to make the reading materials more accessible.

 

Keywords

 

Rape- A section of a larger county. Each rape was owned by a lord, and contained their court and castle.

 

Norman- People who originated from Normandy, in France.

 

Saxon- Raiders and settlers, who migrated to England, from Germany.

 

Feudal- A system where a King has absolute rule over a country, and lords and barons serve as his second-in-command(s).

 

Baron- The lowest rank of nobility.

 

Barony- The estates of a Baron.

 

Toll– A forced payment of money, usually in return for crossing a road or bridge.

 

Burial fees– The cost for burying a dead relative, paid to the church or abbey where they were buried.

 

Bequeathed- To give something to somebody else. Often land, or money.

 

Crusader- A type of knight who went on religious campaigns.

 

Redeem- To make up for bad behaviour.

 

Heiress- A woman who inherits the land of her parents.

 

Chieftain- A person who is in charge of a group, or a clan, of other people.

 

Merrymaking– To have fun.

 

Motte- A mound forming the site of a castle or camp.

 

Bailey- The outer wall of a castle.

 

Fortify- Providing a place with defensive works to protect it against attack.

 

Patriarch(In this context)- A bishop, or senior member of a religious faith.

 

Layman- A non ordained male member of a church.

 

Monk- A member of a religious community of men typically living under vows of poverty, chastity, and obedience.

 

Folklore- The traditional beliefs, customs, and stories of a community, passed through the generations by word of mouth.

 

Magna Carta- A document constituting a fundamental guarantee of rights and privileges,  which the English barons forced King John to give his assent to in 1215.

 

Subsidence- The gradual caving in or sinking of a land.

 

Roundheads– A member or supporter of the Parliamentary party in the English Civil War.

 

Cavaliers- a supporter of King Charles I in the English Civil War.

 

Transepts- (in a cross-shaped church) either of the two parts forming the arms of the cross shape, projecting at right angles from the nave.

 

Gatehouse- a house standing by a gateway, especially on a country estate
